Research Projects: The Family Food Environment Lab

In the Family Food Environments Lab we aim to identify strategies to improve food choice and intake among families with young children. We do this by using innovative strategies, such as behavioral economics, to alter the food environment. We work with interdisciplinary teams, including those in public health, marketing, and psychology, and engage with the community. 

Infant & Toddler Foods

Project collaboration with University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Department of Pediatrics, Nutrition Section exploring commercially available infant and toddler foods in the United States.

Role: Planning, organization, data collection, analysis, and dissemination of results (3 published articles, 5 abstracts, Outstanding Student Research Award from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics).

Modern Food Environments: Restaurants

An interdisciplinary effort aimed at improving the nutritional quality of children’s consumption in restaurants using behavioral economics.

Role: Lead Study Coordinator/Doctoral Research – design, planning, and execution of the restaurant study and its various offshoots including national surveys and coordination of efforts with Boulder County Public Health. Designed and conducted related doctoral dissertation research (4 published articles, 5 abstracts).

Modern Food Environments: Grocery Stores

A pilot project examining the use of healthful, default shopping carts in online grocery shopping for adults at risk for type 2 diabetes.

Role: Data management, organization, and analysis, preparation of manuscripts, mentoring and supervision of undergraduate research assistants (1 published article, 1 in preparation)
